Hymns, Prayers and Encouragements 1/1/14

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsAnother year is dawning, Dear Father, let it be, in working or in waiting another year with Thee; another year of progress, another year of praise, another year of proving Thy presence all the days.
Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace; another year of gladness in the shining of Thy face; another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast; another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest.
Another year of service, of witness for Thy love; another year of training for holier work above. Another year of dawning, Dear Father, let it be, on earth, or else in heaven, another year for Thee. Amen.

Hymns, Prayers and Encouragements 29/3/13 Good Friday

Good Friday

Perhaps one, or perhaps THE greatest hymn of all time was written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), a hymn that Charles Wesley apparently said he would have happily given up all the hymns he had written if he could have penned this one!

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsWhen I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o’er His body on the tree;
Then I am dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Can you answer, yes, Amen, to that?  If not then it is because you do not yet completely understand what it is all about.  Leave your email in the feedback and I will try to help you in this journey.

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsIn God we can trust all our lives.

Day by day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here; trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear. He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what He deems best—lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure, mingling toil with peace and rest.

Ev’ry day the Lord Himself is near me with a special mercy for each hour; all my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me, He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r. The protection of His child and treasure is a charge that on Himself He laid: “As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,” this the pledge to me He made.

Lina Sandell Berg, 1832–1903

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsPrayer is not just a time for making requests to God though it includes this – but it is about our relationship to God.  The following hymn is as a result of a prayer meeting that had been attended by the author:

Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray; this is my heart cry day unto day; I long to know Thy will and Thy way; teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray.

Power in prayer, Lord, power in prayer, here ’mid earth’s sin and sorrow and care; men lost and dying, souls in despair—O give me power, power in prayer!

My weakened will, Lord, Thou canst renew; my sinful nature Thou canst subdue; fill me just now with power anew, power to pray and power to do!

Teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray; Thou art my Pattern day unto day; Thou art my surety now and for aye; teach me to pray, Lord, teach me to pray.

Living in Thee, Lord, and Thou in me; constant abiding, this is my plea; grant me Thy power boundless and free: Power with men and power with Thee.

Albert S. Reitz, 1879–1966

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsO God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne still may we dwell secure; sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood or earth received her frame, from everlasting Thou art God, to endless years the same.

Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be Thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home.

Isaac Watts 1674–1748

Hymns, Prayers and Encouragements 24/2/13

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsThe following hymn is our response to God’s promise to us to forever with us…

O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end; be Thou forever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if Thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if Thou wilt be my guide.

O let me feel Thee near me—the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear: My foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw Thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O Jesus, Thou hast promised to all who follow Thee, that where Thou art in glory, there shall Thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsHymns

Yesterday I was having a discussion with Christian friends after I mentioned that great encouragement that one day we will see Jesus face to face and thinking about what hymns and songs there were.  So, I thought, why not?  Why not have one posted today!  So here you are and I hope you will make it your prayer and it is an encouragement to you…

Face to face with Christ my Saviour,
Face to face what will it be,
When with rapture I behold Him,
Jesus Christ who died for me?
Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky.
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by.
Only faintly now I see Him,
With the darkling veil between.
But a blessed day is coming
When His glory shall be seen.
What rejoicing in His presence
When are banished grief and pain.
When the crooked ways are straightened
And the dark things shall be plain.
Face to face!  O blissful moment!
Face to face, to see and know.
Face to face with my Redeemer,
Jesus Christ who loves me so.

Hymns, Prayers and Encouragements 9/2/13

Hymns Prayers and EncouragementsHymns breathe the praise of the saints, The vision of the prophets,
The prayers of the penitent and the spirit of the martyrs.
They bring solace to the sad, assurance to the perplexed,
Faith to the doubter and comfort to the oppressed.
They span the centuries of history and bridge the barriers of denominations.
Study them to be pure in heart;
Sing them to be joyful in spirit,
Store them in the mind to possess a treasury of worship.
